Whole is a book exploring the interplay between order and randomness, using hidden rules and hand-punched holes to create intriguing compositions. It poses a series of questions, such as 'Is there really such a thing as randomness?' and 'Do we all live out patterns from the past?' that are translated into visual forms. Through the use of structure, pattern and gesture, the sequence of pages establishes a recognisable pattern before raising a question about its own rationale: 'If a rule to create cannot be retraced, does the rule still exist?' The book features five differently-sized circles, each containing three types of pages: those with discernible grids; those with specific applied rules (e.g. moving forwards or backwards, rotating and twisting, etc.); and pages that appear to be random, which are exclusive to each copy of the book.
Hand folded concertina style binding is covered in Windsor Berkeley. The front cover has cloth inlays in Windsor Rochester, which is a unique constellation of five differently-sized circles for each copy, reflecting the holes in each book. The book is housed in a solander box covered in Windsor Rochester with suede panels in Chamel Marine.
This edition is limited to 23 copies.
