The poems in Les Climats evoke the vivid moods and sensory beauty of Mediterranean landscapes, blending nature, memory, and emotion into a lyrical celebration of place and atmosphere. Schmied's wood engravings display beautiful cutting marks that add rich textures to the illustrations – whether through oval or round shapes, long lines, or other forms created by his engraving tools. The design draws on these marks to evoke an atmosphere that is reflective, nostalgic and transient (inspired by the emotions conveyed in the poems), while also suggesting an abstract sense of landscape.
