About

The Institutions of Russian Modernism by Jonathan Stone

Bound in 2018

Northwestern University Press 2017
237 x 159 x 28 mm

Full leather binding in red goatskin with goatskin onlays in various colours. Red leather joints and doublures. Hand sewn silk headbands. The endpapers have been printed using photopolymer intaglio etching process.

The book charts the key role of Symbolism as the earlierst form of modernism in Russia. The design is derived from the graphic 'elements' of the publisher's device of Skorpion, the publishing house which was instrumental in uniting the Russian symbolists. This symbolic logo is deconstructed and shown on the cover in a hidden, indirect and suggestive way.
